Man Shot Dead While Sleeping in Varanasi Slum

A 53-year-old man, identified as Rajan, was shot dead in the early hours of Monday while sleeping on a cot outside his house in the Beniabagh slum area under Chowk police station in Varanasi. The incident occurred despite the presence of his family members sleeping nearby, who surprisingly did not hear the gunshots.

Details of the Incident

Rajan had two wives. His first wife resides in Narayanpur, Mirzapur, while his second wife lived in the Beniabagh slum. He had recently arrived from Mirzapur to attend the engagement ceremony of his second wife's younger son, scheduled for June 20. After having dinner, he went to sleep on a cot outside the house.

According to the police, the assailants fired multiple shots, hitting Rajan five times. Despite the loud noise, none of the family members, including his son Raju who was sleeping nearby with his wife, heard the firing. Raju stated that two armed miscreants had raided the house on Saturday but fled when Rajan raised an alarm.

Police Investigation

DCP Kashi Zone Gaurav Banswal confirmed that Chowk police reached the spot and found Rajan's body lying in a pool of blood on the cot. Forensic experts collected evidence, and an empty shell was recovered from the cot. The body has been sent for postmortem examination.
