A court in Mangaluru has sentenced an absconding accused to life imprisonment in a murder case dating back to 2017. The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, bringing closure to a case that had remained unresolved for years due to the accused's evasion of arrest.
Case Background
The incident occurred in 2017 when the accused, identified as Ravi, allegedly murdered a man named Suresh following a personal dispute. The victim was attacked with a sharp weapon and succumbed to his injuries on the spot. Following the crime, the accused fled and remained at large, prompting the police to declare him an absconder.
Investigation and Trial
The Mangaluru police launched a thorough investigation, collecting forensic evidence and recording statements from witnesses. Despite the accused's absence, the police managed to build a strong case. The trial proceeded in the designated court, where the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including eyewitness accounts and medical reports.
During the trial, the court issued multiple summons to the accused, but he failed to appear. Consequently, the court declared him an absconder and continued the proceedings in his absence under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code.
Verdict and Sentencing
After evaluating the evidence, the court found the accused guilty of murder under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code. The judge sentenced him to life imprisonment, along with a fine. The court also directed the authorities to take necessary steps to apprehend the absconding convict and ensure the sentence is executed.
This verdict underscores the judiciary's commitment to delivering justice even when the accused attempts to evade the legal process. The family of the deceased expressed satisfaction with the court's decision, hoping it serves as a deterrent against similar crimes.
