Mangaluru Police Take Action Against Illegal River Dumping
In a significant environmental enforcement move, the Barke police station in Mangaluru has officially registered a First Information Report (FIR) based on a complaint from the Mangaluru City Corporation's city planning officer. The complaint centers on the illegal dumping of construction debris into the Phalguni River near Sulthan Bathery, highlighting a serious breach of environmental regulations.
Details of the Complaint and Illegal Activities
The city planning officer filed the complaint on Friday, alleging that between April 2 and April 7, large quantities of construction debris and soil were unlawfully dumped into the Phalguni River. This activity was reportedly carried out using a vehicle operating within the jurisdiction of the Barke police station, indicating a deliberate and organized effort to dispose of waste in the river.
According to the official, approximately 15 to 20 cents of government land were encroached upon by filling the river area with this construction debris and soil. This not only poses a threat to the river's ecosystem but also represents a clear violation of public property laws.
Legal Actions and Ongoing Investigation
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy confirmed that a case has been registered against the president of the Mogaveera Mahasabha and the owner of the lorry involved in the dumping. The charges have been filed under sections 324 (5) and 329 (3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with sections 2 (a) and 2 (b) of the Karnataka Prevention of Destruction and Loss of Property Act.
The lorry used for dumping the debris has been seized by authorities as part of the initial response to the incident. Commissioner Reddy emphasized that further investigation into the case is currently underway to uncover all details and hold responsible parties accountable.
This case underscores the growing concerns over illegal waste disposal practices in urban areas and the proactive measures being taken by local authorities to combat such environmental offenses. The Mangaluru City Corporation and police are working collaboratively to ensure strict adherence to environmental protection laws and prevent future incidents of this nature.
