Mangaluru Jail Authorities Seize Phones in Midnight Surprise Raid
In a dramatic late-night operation, prison authorities in Mangaluru conducted a surprise inspection at the district jail, resulting in the seizure of mobile phones and chargers from inmates housed in various barracks. The unannounced raid underscores ongoing efforts to curb unauthorized communication and contraband within the facility.
Details of the Late-Night Inspection
The complainant, Superintendent Sharanabasappa of the district jail, reported that on February 6 at approximately 11:58 PM, he led a team of jail officers and staff in an unexpected inspection. The operation targeted specific rooms in the 'A' and 'B' blocks of the jail, aiming to disrupt any illicit activities under the cover of darkness.
The inspection focused on:
- Room No. 1 and Room No. 4 of the 'A' block
- Room No. 5 of the 'B' block
Items Recovered During the Raid
During the thorough search, authorities recovered several prohibited items from the inmates. The seizures included:
- A keypad mobile phone and a charger from Ibrahim Harshad, who was lodged in A block, Room No. 1.
- A keypad mobile phone from Asgar, an inmate in the A block.
- A keypad mobile phone and a charger from Chandrahassa Poojary, housed in B block, Room No. 5.
These recoveries highlight the challenges faced by prison management in preventing the smuggling of electronic devices, which can be used for unauthorized communication or other illegal purposes.
Legal Action and Ongoing Measures
Following the inspection, a formal case has been registered at the Barke police station to investigate the incident further. This step is part of standard protocol to address violations of prison rules and ensure accountability.
Prison officials emphasized that such surprise inspections are crucial for maintaining discipline and security within the jail premises. They serve as a deterrent to inmates attempting to bypass regulations and help authorities stay vigilant against potential threats.
The Mangaluru district jail has been implementing stricter measures to combat contraband, with regular checks and enhanced surveillance. This latest raid reflects a proactive approach to uphold law and order, ensuring the safety of both inmates and staff.
