Mangaluru Man Arrested After Fleeing Robbery Sentence

Mangaluru East police have arrested a man who went into hiding after a court delivered its verdict in a robbery case. The arrest followed a warrant issued by the court, and the individual has now been produced before judicial authorities.

Court Orders Three-Year Sentence After Arrest

The court directed the accused to undergo three years of rigorous imprisonment. He must also pay a fine of five thousand rupees. This decision comes after he failed to comply with earlier court orders.

Details of the Accused and Case

Navin Sequeira, aged 52, is the son of the late Montu Sequeira. He resides in Tokkottu Chembugudde, Permannur Post, Mangaluru. Police booked him in 2011 and 2012 at the Mangaluru East police station. The charges fell under Section 392 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with robbery.

Legal Proceedings and Appeals

After a trial, the court found the charges proven. In 2015, it sentenced Sequeira to three years of rigorous imprisonment. The court imposed a fine of five thousand rupees at that time.

Sequeira challenged this order by filing a criminal writ petition before the high court. The high court heard the petition and modified the sentence. It ordered him to undergo one year of simple imprisonment instead. The fine was increased to fifteen thousand rupees.

The high court directed that the sentence be served within the year 2022. It further stated that if Sequeira failed to comply, the earlier order from the district court would come into force.

Absconding and Arrest

Following the pronouncement of the high court judgment, Sequeira went absconding. This prompted the court to issue an arrest warrant against him.

Acting on credible information, warrant execution staff from the Mangaluru East police station arrested Sequeira recently. The team included ASI Machendranath Jogi, head constables Abhishek, and Narappa KB.

They apprehended him at a bar and restaurant in Honnakatte, Surathkal. Police then produced him before the court.

Court's Final Order

The court, in accordance with its earlier order, directed Sequeira to undergo three years of rigorous imprisonment. He must also pay the original fine of five thousand rupees. This action enforces the district court's initial sentence due to his non-compliance.
