Suspected Militant Killed in Manipur Encounter, MLA Claims Civilian Death
Manipur Encounter: Militant Killed or Civilian? MLA Demands Probe

Imphal: A suspected militant was killed by security forces during an encounter in Churachandpur district on Tuesday. However, village authorities and Henglep MLA Letzamang Haokip said he was a civilian.

Haokip identified the deceased as Lenminsang, son of Lenkhogin Haokip. “I strongly and unequivocally condemn the shocking killing of Lenminsang at the hands of joint security forces in Songkong village,” he said.

“Eyewitnesses have alleged that after he was shot, his clothes were removed and his body was taken away by security forces. They further alleged that after his death, attempts were made to portray the incident as an encounter. If these allegations are found to be true, it would constitute a grave abuse of authority and a serious violation of the rule of law. This is unacceptable and demands immediate attention. These allegations are extremely serious and warrant an immediate, impartial and transparent investigation,” the MLA said.

Manipur Police on Wednesday said they were informed by the Assam Rifles that the encounter took place in an area between Molphei and Songkong villages. It was a joint operation carried out by the paramilitary force and the Army.

“During the encounter, one suspected militant was killed. One AK-47 rifle, along with magazines, ammunition, explosives, and other incriminating items, were recovered from the spot,” police said. A case has been registered and further investigation is on.

Songkong village authorities said the Army launched an attack at the village in the Henglep sub-division of Churachandpur on Tuesday afternoon. It alleged the forces used highly sophisticated weapons, including drones and various bombs in the attack, during which the civilian was killed.

“The whereabouts of his mortal remains are not known yet,” the statement said.
