In a major security crackdown ahead of Republic Day celebrations, Manipur Police and security forces have intensified intelligence-based combing, cordon, and search operations across vulnerable and fringe areas of the state. These preemptive measures have led to the recovery of a substantial cache of arms, ammunition, and explosives, along with multiple arrests of individuals connected to extortion activities and banned militant outfits.
Extensive Area Domination Exercises Yield Significant Seizures
According to official statements from Manipur Police, extensive area domination exercises were carried out between January 24 and 25 across several districts. These operations resulted in the seizure of sophisticated weaponry, including RPG ammunition, assault rifles, grenades, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), detonators, magazines, and communication equipment. The recoveries were made from strategic locations in Churachandpur, Kakching, Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal, and Jiribam districts.
Preventive Action Near Indo-Myanmar Border
In a crucial preventive action ahead of the national event, security forces detected and successfully neutralized three IEDs near the Indo-Myanmar Border under the jurisdiction of Moreh Police Station in Tengnoupal district. This operation highlights the heightened vigilance along sensitive border areas to thwart any potential threats during Republic Day festivities.
Crackdown on Extortion Networks and Banned Outfits
Parallel operations targeting extortion networks led to significant arrests. On January 25, an active cadre of the banned Revolutionary People's Front/People's Liberation Army (RPF/PLA), identified as Yumnam Brojen Singh alias Kunjo (55), was apprehended from Imphal West district. His younger brother, Yumnam Thomas Singh (45), was also arrested for allegedly attempting to destroy evidence related to the case.
In a separate operation, police arrested Md Nawaj Khan (32) from Senapati Bazar for allegedly issuing threat calls and extortion demand letters. Several documents and electronic devices were seized from the accused during these arrests, underscoring the ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating in the region.
Traffic Enforcement and Public Appeals
During the same period, enforcement drives against traffic violations were also intensified. Between January 19 and 25, authorities issued 188 challans, collecting fines amounting to Rs 2.74 lakh. Action was taken against 11 vehicles fitted with tinted films, while one vehicle was detained for further investigation.
Authorities have appealed for public cooperation, urging citizens to remain vigilant, avoid believing or circulating rumors and fake content on social media, and report any suspicious activity promptly. Additionally, people were encouraged to voluntarily surrender any looted arms, ammunition, or explosives to the nearest police station or security force unit, emphasizing a community-based approach to maintaining law and order.
