In response to a series of break-ins at six shops in the bustling Mapusa market, a high-level police inspection was conducted on Saturday. Superintendent of Police Salim Shaikh and Police Inspector Naveen Desai led the joint operation, which included members of the Mapusa Traders Association, local council representatives, and civic organization delegates.
Police Assurance and Investigation Progress
During the inspection, police officials thoroughly reviewed the existing security infrastructure in the market area. Addressing the concerns of agitated traders, PI Naveen Desai provided assurances of enhanced vigilance. "We are actively scanning all available CCTV footage from the vicinity," Desai stated. "Suspicious movements of an individual have been identified, and we are confident that an arrest will be made shortly." Traders' Frustration Over Administrative Delays
Jitendra Phalari, president of the Mapusa Traders Association, expressed deep frustration over what he termed administrative inaction. "In a glaring lapse, the Mapusa Municipal Council has failed to install CCTV cameras in the market—six years after a resolution was passed to do so," Phalari emphasized. "With the project still stuck on paper, local businesses remain highly vulnerable to criminal activities." This delay has exacerbated security concerns, leaving traders feeling unprotected despite repeated appeals.
Civic Demands and Memorandum Submission
A delegation led by social activist Sanjay Barde, along with functionaries from the Congress party and the civic activist group 'Together for Mapusa', submitted a formal memorandum to authorities. Their demands include:
- Implementation of a strict police blockade in the market between 10 PM and 6 AM to deter nighttime crimes.
- Mandatory issuance of identity cards by the municipality for all traders, employees, and vendors to enhance accountability.
- A comprehensive verification drive targeting homeless individuals and laborers to ensure community safety.
The civic forum has issued a seven-day notice to authorities, urging immediate improvements in law and order measures. This move underscores the growing impatience among residents and business owners for tangible action.
