Margao Police Arrest Driver in Hit-and-Run, Add Attempt to Murder

Margao town police on Wednesday arrested the driver of a rent-a-cab vehicle that knocked down a woman two-wheeler rider at Sirlim and fled the scene. The accused was traced to Calangute with the help of CCTV and dashcam footage.

Arrest and Charges

The accused, Swaraj Jagtap, 19, a native of Pune, was brought to the police station after his arrest. Given the gravity of the incident, police added a case of attempt to murder against him under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He was earlier charged with rash and negligent driving. The Thar vehicle involved in the accident has also been seized.

Investigation Details

Margao town police alerted other police stations after identifying the Thar. Police Inspector Arun Gauns Dessai is conducting further investigation in the case. The swift action by law enforcement highlights the use of modern surveillance technology in solving crimes.

Nivia Gomes, 44, the victim, is currently undergoing treatment at GMC. Her relatives stated that she sustained fractures and was undergoing surgery. The incident has raised concerns about road safety and the accountability of rent-a-cab drivers in the region.
