Mathura Boat Tragedy: Death Toll Climbs to 11, High-Level Inquiry Ordered

The death toll in the tragic boat accident on the Yamuna river in Mathura district has risen to 11 as of Saturday, with rescue teams continuing their desperate search for four missing pilgrims. The motorized boat, carrying 37 devotees primarily from Ludhiana, Punjab, collided with a pontoon bridge and capsized on Friday, plunging the religious pilgrimage into chaos and sorrow.

Families Devastated as Seven Relatives Perish Together

According to police reports, seven members of a single family—mostly distant relatives—were among those who lost their lives in the devastating incident. The pilgrims had arrived in the Mathura-Vrindavan area on April 9 to visit sacred religious sites, their spiritual journey tragically cut short by the Yamuna's treacherous waters.

Arrests Made, FIR Registered Against Boat Operator and Contractor

In the aftermath of the tragedy, authorities have taken swift legal action. An FIR has been registered under BNS section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against boatman Pappu Nishad (38) and contractor Narayan Sharma (58), both of whom were arrested on Saturday. Police investigations reveal that Sharma was responsible for overseeing the removal work of the pontoon bridge involved in the collision.

"Orders for a high-level inquiry have been issued," stated Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak, emphasizing the government's commitment to uncovering the truth behind the disaster.

Mathura District Magistrate CP Singh added, "We will address the shortcomings and fix accountability. The Additional District Magistrate has been assigned to probe this tragic incident thoroughly."

Eyewitness Accounts Reveal Critical Safety Lapses

Local residents and fellow boat operators have pointed to multiple safety violations that contributed to the catastrophe. According to Mohar Singh, another boatman who heroically rescued pilgrims from the river, "As part of the Yamuna riverfront project, a pontoon bridge was being removed. The area was not properly restricted, and no safety norms were followed. The motorized boat was speeding dangerously."

An eyewitness described the terrifying moments after impact: "After the collision, the boat started moving uncontrollably. Pilgrims shifted to a corner in panic, causing the vessel to tilt and overturn completely into the river."

Massive Rescue Operation Deployed, Compensation Announced

Rescue efforts have been extensive and relentless. Mathura SP (rural) Suresh Chandra Rawat detailed the operation: "One more body was found approximately 800 meters away from the incident site. The victim was from Punjab's Abohar, and his family was present when rescue teams recovered him."

In total, authorities have deployed:

  • Eight teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF)
  • Five teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF)
  • Three Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) teams
  • Six private diver teams

These teams have been working around the clock since Friday night to locate the missing devotees.

National and State Leaders Respond with Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ex-gratia compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased victim, while the injured will receive Rs 50,000 each. All recovered bodies have been sent to Punjab for final rites.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann participated in some of the last rites in Ludhiana and had previously spoken with his Uttar Pradesh counterpart, Yogi Adityanath, on Friday to coordinate response efforts.

The tragedy has cast a shadow over the sacred pilgrimage sites of Mathura and Vrindavan, raising serious questions about safety protocols on river transportation during religious festivals and infrastructure projects.
