Major Inter-State Telecom Theft Gang Busted in Meerut, Equipment Worth Crores Seized
In a significant crackdown on organized crime, a 30-year-old man was arrested in Meerut on Monday for allegedly being a key member of an inter-state gang involved in the large-scale theft of high-value telecom equipment. The arrest marks a major breakthrough in a case that has plagued telecom infrastructure across multiple states.
Coordinated Police Operation Leads to Arrest and Recovery
Acting on a joint operation, the SWAT team and Lohiya Nagar police apprehended the accused, identified as Mohd Shahrukh, from Zakir Colony in Meerut. During the raid, authorities made a staggering recovery of 237 Base Band Unit (BBU) devices and 156 copper cards. The seized equipment has an estimated market value exceeding Rs 15.4 crore, highlighting the massive scale of the criminal operation.
Police investigations revealed that Shahrukh was allegedly running a highly organized network that systematically stole telecom equipment and supplied it across state lines for substantial illegal profits. The sophisticated nature of the operation suggests careful planning and coordination among multiple individuals.
Complaint from Telecom Security Supervisor Triggers Investigation
The case first came to light following a formal complaint filed by Pravendra Kumar Tomar, a security supervisor associated with both Indus Towers and Bharti Airtel Ltd. Tomar had raised alarms about repeated thefts from telecom towers across Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, noting a pattern that suggested organized criminal activity rather than isolated incidents.
Technical surveillance and investigative work eventually traced the stolen equipment to Meerut, leading authorities to conduct the decisive raid that resulted in Shahrukh's arrest and the recovery of the valuable telecom components.
Wide Geographic Reach of Criminal Operations
Preliminary investigations have uncovered that the gang operated across an extensive geographic area, targeting multiple districts in Punjab including Bathinda, Firozpur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur, and Jalandhar. The criminal network also extended its activities to parts of Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the Moradabad region.
This wide operational range indicates the gang had established logistical channels for transporting stolen equipment across state borders, complicating law enforcement efforts until the recent breakthrough.
Official Statement and Legal Proceedings
Senior Superintendent of Police Avinash Pandey addressed the media regarding the case, stating, "The recovery is worth over Rs 15 crore. Efforts are on to arrest other gang members. Further probe is on to uncover the full extent of this criminal network."
The police official added that based on the initial complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) has been filed under BNS sections 303 (theft) and 317 (stolen property). These charges reflect the serious nature of the offenses and the substantial value of the stolen property involved.
Ongoing Investigation and Future Actions
Authorities have emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Police teams are working to identify and apprehend additional members of the criminal gang who may still be at large. The recovery of such a large quantity of stolen equipment suggests the possibility of multiple storage locations and distribution networks that require further investigation.
The case highlights growing concerns about organized crime targeting critical infrastructure, particularly in the telecommunications sector where equipment represents significant financial value. The successful operation demonstrates improved coordination between different police units in tackling complex inter-state criminal networks.
