Massive Inter-State Telecom Theft Network Uncovered in Meerut
In a significant crackdown on organized crime, police in Meerut have arrested a 30-year-old man allegedly involved in a large-scale inter-state gang specializing in the theft of high-value telecom equipment. The operation, conducted jointly by the SWAT team and Lohiya Nagar police, resulted in the seizure of equipment valued at over Rs 15.4 crore.
Arrest and Seizure Details
The accused, identified as Mohd Shahrukh, was apprehended from Zakir Colony in Meerut. During the raid, authorities confiscated a substantial cache of stolen telecom devices, including 237 Base Band Unit (BBU) devices and 156 copper cards. These components are critical for telecommunications infrastructure and command high prices on the black market.
Police investigations revealed that Shahrukh was operating an organized network that systematically supplied stolen equipment across multiple states, generating hefty profits. The gang's operations spanned several districts in Punjab, such as Bathinda, Firozpur, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sangrur, and Jalandhar, as well as parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Moradabad.
How the Case Unfolded
The case came to light following a formal complaint by Pravendra Kumar Tomar, a security supervisor associated with Indus Towers and Bharti Airtel Ltd. Tomar reported repeated thefts from telecom towers across Uttar Pradesh and Punjab, prompting a detailed investigation.
Utilizing technical surveillance, authorities were able to trace the stolen equipment to Meerut, which led to the coordinated raid and subsequent arrest. This highlights the increasing reliance on digital forensics in combating sophisticated criminal networks.
Official Statements and Legal Action
Senior Superintendent of Police Avinash Pandey addressed the media, stating, “The recovery is worth over Rs 15 crore. Efforts are on to arrest other gang members. Further probe is on.” He confirmed that based on the complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 303 (theft) and 317 (stolen property).
Pandey emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, with police actively working to identify and apprehend additional members of the gang. The scale of the seizure underscores the gang's extensive operations and the significant financial impact of telecom theft on the industry.
Broader Implications
This arrest sheds light on the growing issue of telecom equipment theft in India, which disrupts services and incurs substantial losses for companies. The inter-state nature of the gang suggests a well-coordinated criminal enterprise, exploiting vulnerabilities in security across regions.
Authorities urge telecom companies to enhance security measures around their infrastructure to prevent such incidents. The successful operation in Meerut serves as a reminder of the importance of collaborative efforts between law enforcement and private sector stakeholders in tackling organized crime.
