Meghalaya HC Hears Arguments in Sonam Raghuvanshi Case

The Meghalaya High Court on Thursday commenced hearing arguments in defense of Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of her husband Raja at Sohra in May 2025. The hearing remained inconclusive, and the court has scheduled further proceedings for Friday.

Court Proceedings

Justice W Diengdoh, presiding over the case, stated, 'Heard Mr S Thapa, learned counsel for the respondent. Hearing is not concluded and will continue tomorrow (05.06.2026). List accordingly.' This development occurred in the case of the State of Meghalaya versus Sonam Raghuvanshi.

State's Argument for Bail Cancellation

On Monday, the High Court had heard arguments from the state government, represented by Advocate General A Kumar, who sought the cancellation of the bail granted to Sonam. The state contended that the accused was fully aware of the grounds of her arrest and submitted supporting documents to the court on May 4, requesting the revocation of bail.

Background of the Case

The High Court had earlier, on May 12, begun hearing the criminal petition filed by the Meghalaya government challenging the bail granted to Sonam. She was granted conditional bail by Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) of Shillong, Dashalene R Kharbteng, on April 27, citing procedural lapses during her arrest. The bail order noted that Sonam was not made aware of the correct section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) under which she was detained.

The Murder

Raja, an Indore-based transport businessman, was murdered near a waterfall at Sohra in May 2025. The crime was executed by a gang of four killers hired from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, allegedly at the behest of his newly married wife Sonam during their honeymoon trip. The case has drawn significant attention due to the involvement of hired assassins and the honeymoon setting.

The court will continue hearing the matter on Friday, where further arguments from the defense are expected.
