Migrant Labourers Targeted in Shooting Incident in Punjab's Moga District
In a shocking and unprecedented incident in Punjab, three unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire at a group of migrant labourers in a village located on the Zira–Moga Road in the Moga district on Tuesday. The attack has sent shockwaves through the region, highlighting growing tensions and security concerns.
Panic and Injuries Reported in Khosa Jalal Village
The firing triggered widespread panic in the area, with residents of Khosa Jalal reporting the sound of multiple gunshots echoing through the village. According to Ajay Gandhi, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Moga, one migrant labourer, identified as Ashok, sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the assault.
"He was rushed to the hospital and is out of danger," Gandhi stated, providing some relief amid the distressing situation. Another labourer received a minor graze injury, as confirmed by the SSP, who added that the three assailants specifically targeted the migrant labourers as they were walking past the location.
Instagram Post Claims Responsibility with Inflammatory Threats
Meanwhile, a purported post on Instagram by a user named Nirvair Singh has claimed responsibility for the attack, suggesting that the assailants belonged to the notorious Davinder Bambiha gang. The post, which included inflammatory language and a video of the incident, stated:
"Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. The firing that took place on the bhaiyas (people from UP–Bihar) in Khosa Jalal village was carried out by us — Ladi Bhalwan and Nirvair Singh."
The video shows a group of labourers walking when the attackers open fire, apparently aiming at their legs. The post described the firing as a "protest" against migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, issuing threats against local elected representatives and alleged drug smugglers. It also warned of further violence if migrants were not driven out of villages and towns across Punjab, escalating fears of communal and regional strife.
Police Investigation Underway as Social Media Post is Verified
When asked about the social media post claiming responsibility, SSP Gandhi emphasized that the case is being thoroughly investigated from all angles. "We are investigating the case from all angles. The social media post is being verified. An FIR is being registered at the Moga Sadar police station, and the victim's statement is being recorded. He is a local factory worker," Gandhi explained, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating the incident.
The attack has raised significant concerns about the safety of migrant labourers in Punjab, who often come from states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar for employment opportunities. This incident marks a disturbing escalation in targeted violence, prompting calls for enhanced security measures and community vigilance.
As the investigation progresses, residents and officials alike are on high alert, hoping to prevent any further outbreaks of violence and ensure justice for the victims. The broader implications for social harmony and law and order in the region remain a critical focus in the aftermath of this alarming event.
