Kerala Mining Directorate Employee Arrested for Accepting Bribe in Thiruvananthapuram
In a significant anti-corruption operation, officials from the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) arrested an employee of the directorate of mining and geology in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday. The arrest occurred at the district office while the accused was allegedly accepting a bribe.
Details of the Arrest and Accused
The arrested individual has been identified as Christian Jose, a resident of Kattakada, who worked as a lab attendant in the directorate. According to VACB officials, he was caught red-handed while accepting Rs 5,000 from a complainant. This payment was part of a larger bribe allegedly demanded to expedite the issuance of a transit pass required for removing soil from a property.
Background of the Bribery Case
The complainant, a native of Attingal and owner of a truck used for transporting soil, had approached the mining and geology office after experiencing delays in obtaining the transit pass. The application for the pass had been submitted by a property owner from Chirayinkeezhu, who planned to remove soil from his land for construction purposes.
During a visit to the office, Jose allegedly approached the complainant and offered to speed up the processing of the pass in exchange for a bribe of Rs 50,000. He reportedly explained that Rs 40,000 of this amount was intended for other officials, while Rs 10,000 was for himself.
Sequence of Events Leading to Arrest
Vigilance officials detailed that on February 23, Jose contacted the complainant over the phone and instructed him to collect the bribe amount from the property owner and transfer it to him. When the complainant met Jose again at the office on Monday and informed him that he did not have the full amount, Jose allegedly demanded Rs 5,000 as an advance token.
This demand set the stage for the trap laid by VACB officials, who monitored the transaction and arrested Jose while he was accepting the money. The operation highlights ongoing efforts to combat corruption in government departments, particularly in sectors involving permits and regulatory approvals.
Implications and Broader Context
The arrest underscores the challenges faced by citizens in navigating bureaucratic processes, where delays can lead to illicit demands for bribes. It also reflects the proactive role of vigilance agencies in Kerala in addressing such malpractices. Officials have emphasized that this case will be thoroughly investigated to determine if other employees were involved, as suggested by the accused's claim about sharing the bribe with colleagues.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in public offices, especially in departments handling critical permits like those for mining and construction activities. The VACB has urged the public to report similar incidents to help curb corruption and ensure efficient service delivery.
