Two Fatalities in Separate Heavy Vehicle Accidents Rock Sahnewal, Ludhiana
In a tragic series of events on Thursday, two individuals, including a minor girl, lost their lives in separate accidents involving heavy vehicles in the Sahnewal area of Ludhiana, Punjab. The incidents have sparked outrage among local residents, who have long complained about unchecked heavy vehicle traffic in the region.
Details of the Fatal Incidents
In the first accident, a speeding tipper truck, traveling from Sahnewal towards Kohara, crushed 60-year-old Jindar Singh, a security guard from Ghawaddi village in Dehlon. The victim was reportedly coming from the same direction when the collision occurred.
The second incident involved a container truck moving from Sahnewal towards Doraha, which struck and killed a 17-year-old girl identified as Sonali, a resident of the Ramgarh road area. She was riding a two-wheeler at the time of the accident. Preliminary investigations indicate that overspeeding by both heavy vehicles was the primary cause of these devastating mishaps.
Police Response and Legal Actions
Investigating officer Gurmeet Singh confirmed that cases have been registered against the drivers of both vehicles under Sections 281, 106, 125-A, and 324-4 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The drivers fled the scenes immediately after the accidents. In one case, the driver escaped with the tipper truck, while in the other, the container truck was abandoned and subsequently taken into police custody.
The bodies of the victims are scheduled for post-mortem examinations on Friday, after which they will be handed over to their families for last rites.
Community Outcry Over Negligence
Residents of Sahnewal expressed deep resentment, highlighting repeated failures by local administration and police to regulate heavy vehicle movement. They allege that these vehicles often enter the town illegally and operate at dangerously high speeds, disregarding public safety. This tragedy has amplified calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and improved road safety measures to prevent future loss of life.
The accidents underscore a pressing need for enhanced vigilance and regulatory measures to curb reckless driving by heavy vehicles in urban and suburban areas.
