In a swift operation on Saturday, a team comprising childline officials and local police rescued a minor girl from being married off in the Bhapur area of Nayagarh district, Odisha. The groom, identified as Dilip Parida, managed to flee upon spotting the authorities. According to police sources, the district child protection office (DCPO) received a tip-off about the incident through its toll-free helpline number.
Rescue and Immediate Action
Upon receiving the information, the team reached the venue and rescued the girl. She was later handed over to the child welfare committee for care and counseling. Speaking about the incident, DCPO (Nayagarh) CBM Padhan said, "We rescued the girl and handed her over to the child welfare committee. The girl will be counselled. Her family members are being questioned." He further added that the groom has been identified and efforts are on to trace him.
Investigation into Anganwadi Worker's Role
The DCPO has initiated a probe into allegations that an anganwadi worker acted as an agent in facilitating the child marriage. "We are investigating the involvement of the anganwadi worker and will take strict action if found guilty," Padhan stated. The incident highlights the persistent issue of child marriages in rural areas despite strict laws and awareness campaigns.
Legal Framework and Awareness
Child marriage is a punishable offense under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006, which prescribes rigorous imprisonment and fines. Authorities urge citizens to report such incidents via the child helpline number 1098. The rescued girl will undergo counseling and her future will be decided by the child welfare committee, ensuring her education and well-being are prioritized.
