Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation Launches Drive Against Illegal Constructions After Fatal Fire

In response to a devastating fire on Friday that claimed three lives, the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC) has initiated a weekend-long drive to curb illegal constructions, with a particular focus on unsafe shanties located on both private and government land. This action comes as the city grapples with a series of recent fire incidents, highlighting urgent safety concerns.

Deadly Fire Incident Sparks Immediate Action

The fire at Indralok Phase 3 in Bhayandar East resulted in the tragic deaths of two minors, aged 15, and a 45-year-old man. The blaze gutted approximately 35 shanties, underscoring the perilous conditions in these unauthorized settlements. MBMC Municipal Commissioner Radhabinod Sharma announced the formation of a Special Investigating Team (SIT) to probe the incident, stating, "We have formed a Special Investigating Team to probe Friday’s fire in which three people lost their lives. Once the findings are out, necessary stringent action will be taken."

Recent Fire Incidents and Municipal Response

Over the last three months, MBMC has witnessed several fire incidents, most involving illegal godowns, furniture shops, and shanties. In late May, an illegal godown on an open plot, which was also used for private events, caught fire. Although there were no casualties, residential buildings adjacent to the plot suffered significant damage, with interiors of about 30–35 flats completely destroyed. Following this March 25 incident, the concerned ward officer of Ward 6 was relieved of his duties and reassigned to a different job profile, as confirmed by Commissioner Sharma.

Enhanced Enforcement Measures

To address the ongoing issue, MBMC has divided its six wards equally among two additional commissioners. Their mandate is to identify and act on illegal and unsafe encroachments to prevent further loss of life and revenue damage. Commissioner Sharma emphasized, "Their task is to identify and act on illegal and unsafe encroachments to avoid further loss of life and revenue damage to the MBMC and the common man." This structured approach aims to enhance accountability and enforcement across the municipality.

Activist Concerns and Legal Violations

Activist Dhiraj Parab from Bhayandar raised serious allegations regarding illegal land filling in mangrove and tidal zones behind Navghar village in Bhayandar East. He claimed, "Illegal land filling has been carried out in mangrove and tidal zones by the land mafia. Unauthorised businesses, constructions and slums have been developed, generating huge rental income." Parab urged for strict action not only against the land mafia but also against concerned officials, citing Bombay High Court orders that mandate the removal of illegal fillings and constructions, restoration of natural tidal flow, and replanting of mangroves.

Broader Implications and Future Steps

The crackdown reflects growing municipal efforts to tackle urban safety hazards linked to unauthorized developments. With the SIT investigation underway and enhanced ward-level monitoring, MBMC is poised to implement stricter measures. The community and activists alike are calling for comprehensive actions to address both immediate risks and underlying legal violations, ensuring long-term safety and compliance with environmental regulations.
