Mizoram Police Bust Poppy Plantation, Arrest Two Myanmar Nationals
In a significant crackdown on illegal drug cultivation, police officials in south Mizoram's Lawngtlai district, which borders Myanmar, located and destroyed poppy plantations in the jungle near Rulkual village on Wednesday. The operation resulted in the arrest of two Myanmar nationals, as confirmed by belated police reports that reached Aizawl on Saturday.
Drone-Assisted Search Operation Leads to Discovery
Police officials received crucial information about the presence of poppy cultivation on Monday, prompting an immediate response. A search operation was launched using a drone, which proved instrumental in locating the illicit crops. The operation successfully identified poppy cultivation in a forest area near the Tuiphal river, within the jurisdiction of the Rulkual village council.
Arrests and Seizure of Contraband
Following the discovery, police conducted a raid on the cultivation site. During the operation, two individuals were apprehended: Lalzoa, aged 48, and Aung Ling, aged 51. Initially, they claimed to be residents of Saizawl East village in Lawngtlai district. However, subsequent investigations revealed that both are actually Myanmar nationals, highlighting cross-border involvement in the illegal activity.
From the cultivation area, police seized a substantial quantity of raw opium, totaling 38.52 kilograms. To ensure legal proceedings, 4.40 kilograms were retained as samples to be produced before the court, while the remaining contraband was destroyed on-site to prevent any further misuse.
