A tragic incident unfolded in Mohali's Phase-11 area during the intervening night of February 13 and 14, resulting in the death of a 27-year-old man who was stabbed while attempting to intervene in a violent scuffle outside a temple. The victim, identified as Gursev Singh Bhangu, originally from Tharbi village in Tohana, Haryana, succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital on Monday morning.

Details of the Shivratri Night Tragedy

Gursev Singh Bhangu, who resided with his maternal aunt in Phase-11 and operated an immigration firm in Mohali, had visited the temple to offer prayers on the occasion of Shivratri. According to the police complaint filed by Sanpreet Singh, the incident occurred around 1:30 AM as Gursev and four friends were returning from the temple and encountered a group of 15-20 youths engaged in a heated altercation.

Eyewitnesses reported to the police that Gursev bravely stepped forward in an effort to pacify the quarreling group. However, the situation quickly escalated into a violent argument, during which he was brutally stabbed in the stomach and chest with a sharp-edged weapon. The assailants immediately fled the scene, prompting law enforcement to scan CCTV footage from the area to identify the perpetrators.

Police Investigation and Legal Proceedings

Following the attack, Gursev was rushed to a private hospital in critical condition but tragically passed away during treatment. The police initially registered a First Information Report (FIR) for attempt to murder, but the charges were promptly enhanced to murder after his death. A formal case has been registered at the Phase-11 police station under Sections 109, 118(1), 77, 190, and 191(3) of the Indian Penal Code.

Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans confirmed that five suspects have been detained in connection with the case. Additionally, a motorcycle believed to be linked to the accused has been seized as part of the ongoing investigation. SSP Hans emphasized that a board of doctors will conduct the postmortem examination, and any proven instances of medical negligence will be addressed accordingly.

Family Protests and Allegations

Distraught family members staged a protest outside the private hospital, alleging a delay of nearly two hours in initiating treatment for Gursev. They blocked the road, demanding immediate arrests of the culprits and initially refused to allow the post-mortem until the accused were apprehended. The victim's father, Balwinder Singh, claimed that migrant youths in the area frequently quarrel and create disturbances, asserting that his son was attacked after objecting to their unruly behavior outside the temple.

Friends of the deceased have stated that approximately 17-18 individuals were involved in the assault. Police authorities are actively working to identify and trace the remaining accused persons to ensure justice is served in this heartbreaking case.
