In a brazen act of criminality, two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at a popular dhaba located in the Khanna area of Ludhiana on Tuesday evening. The incident, which occurred around 8:30 PM, is being treated as a suspected extortion attempt by the local police. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the bullets struck the walls and furniture of the establishment.
Incident Details
According to eyewitnesses, the two men arrived on a black motorcycle without a number plate and parked near the dhaba. One of them got off and fired three rounds into the air before targeting the dhaba's entrance. The duo then fled the scene towards the Ludhiana side. The dhaba owner, identified as Gurpreet Singh, stated that he had not received any extortion calls prior to the incident. However, he mentioned that some unidentified persons had been harassing his staff for the past few days.

The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. DSP Singh said, "We are investigating all angles, including personal enmity and extortion. The CCTV footage from the dhaba and nearby establishments is being examined to identify the suspects."

The Khanna Dhaba, a well-known eatery, has been operating for over a decade and is frequented by locals and travelers alike. Business owners in the vicinity have demanded increased police patrolling and better security measures.
Broader Context
This shooting is part of a worrying trend of extortion-related violence in Punjab. In recent months, several businessmen and hotel owners have reported receiving extortion calls from criminal gangs operating from abroad. The state police have launched a special drive to crack down on such activities, but incidents like these highlight the challenges faced by law enforcement.
