A devastating explosion at a firecracker factory in Madhya Pradesh's Harda district has claimed at least 11 lives and left more than 100 people injured. In response, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against the factory owner, vowing to ensure that those responsible face the full force of the law.
Details of the Incident
The blast occurred on Tuesday at a firecracker manufacturing unit located in the Bairagarh area of Harda. The explosion was so powerful that it could be heard several kilometers away, shattering windows and damaging nearby structures. Rescue operations were immediately launched, with teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and local police rushing to the site.
According to officials, the death toll has risen to 11, with many of the injured being rushed to hospitals in Harda and the neighboring city of Indore. The condition of several victims is reported to be critical, and authorities fear that the number of fatalities may increase.
Government Response
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who visited the blast site on Wednesday, expressed deep grief over the tragedy and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the deceased. He also declared that the government would bear the full cost of treatment for the injured.
In a stern move, Yadav invoked the National Security Act against the factory owner, who has been identified as Sanjay Jain. The NSA allows for preventive detention and is typically used in cases involving threats to national security or public order. The Chief Minister stated that the owner had shown gross negligence and that his actions had endangered the lives of many innocent people.
"We will not spare anyone found guilty. The NSA has been invoked against the owner, and further legal action will be taken as per the investigation," Yadav told reporters.
Investigation and Aftermath
A high-level inquiry has been ordered into the incident, with a Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed to probe the circumstances leading to the explosion. Preliminary reports suggest that the factory was operating without proper safety clearances and that a short circuit may have triggered the blast.
Local residents have alleged that the factory had been operating illegally for years and that repeated complaints about safety violations were ignored by authorities. The opposition Congress party has demanded a thorough investigation and accused the state government of negligence.
Meanwhile, the injured are being treated at various hospitals, with the government arranging for specialized medical care. Blood donation camps have been set up to help the victims, and the district administration is working to provide relief to affected families.
The explosion has once again raised questions about the enforcement of safety regulations in firecracker factories across the state. In 2023, a similar blast in the same district had claimed several lives, prompting calls for stricter oversight. However, critics argue that little has changed on the ground.
As the investigation unfolds, the state government has assured that all necessary steps will be taken to prevent such incidents in the future. Chief Minister Yadav has directed officials to conduct a comprehensive audit of all firecracker units in Madhya Pradesh and to shut down those found violating norms.
