The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday adjourned the hearing on petitions seeking cancellation of anticipatory bail granted to retired district judge Giribala Singh in the alleged dowry death case of her daughter-in-law, Twisha Sharma. The court has rescheduled the matter for May 27.
Giribala Singh was granted anticipatory bail by a Bhopal sessions court earlier this month. Twisha Sharma, 33, was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Bhopal's Katara Hills area on May 12. Her family alleged that she was subjected to dowry harassment and abetment to suicide by her husband, lawyer Samarth Singh, and his family. In contrast, her in-laws claimed that she suffered from drug addiction.
The case has drawn national attention after the Supreme Court of India directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the probe into Sharma's death amid allegations of institutional bias in the investigation.
Background of the Case
Twisha Sharma married Samarth Singh in 2019. According to her family, she faced constant dowry demands and harassment from her husband and in-laws. On May 12, she was found hanging in her room. The initial investigation by local police was criticized for alleged bias, leading to the Supreme Court's intervention.
Legal Proceedings
The anticipatory bail granted to Giribala Singh was challenged by Twisha's family, who argued that the retired judge could influence the investigation. The High Court's adjournment gives both sides more time to prepare their arguments.
Reactions
Twisha's father, a retired government officer, expressed disappointment over the delay, stating that justice must be served swiftly. The Singh family's lawyer maintained that the bail was lawfully granted and that his client is cooperating with the investigation.
