Mumbai: Four Arrested for Abusing Cop Over Traffic Rules

Four Individuals Apprehended in Mumbai for Verbally Assaulting Police Officer During Traffic Stop

In a significant incident highlighting challenges faced by law enforcement, the Samta Nagar police in Mumbai have taken four men into custody following a confrontation with a police constable. The altercation erupted when the constable intercepted the group for blatantly violating traffic regulations in the Kandivli East area.

Details of the Traffic Violation and Subsequent Confrontation

The episode unfolded on February 18 when beat marshal Govind Sangle observed a motorcycle carrying four individuals, a clear breach of permissible passenger limits. Additionally, the rider was operating the vehicle without wearing a mandatory safety helmet. Acting on his duty, Sangle signaled the rider to stop and initiated a routine check.

Upon halting, Sangle advised two of the passengers to disembark and seek alternative transportation to comply with traffic laws. He also pointed out the helmet violation to the rider, emphasizing the importance of safety protocols. However, instead of cooperating, the men responded with hostility.

Escalation to Threats and Legal Action

The situation quickly deteriorated as the individuals began using abusive language directed at Constable Sangle and issued threats against him. They outright refused to accompany him to the nearby police station for further processing, challenging his authority.

Faced with resistance, Sangle called for backup to manage the volatile scenario. Following the arrival of reinforcements, the four men were taken into custody. The police have formally registered a First Information Report (FIR) under the provisions of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, specifically citing the offense of "obstructing a government servant from performing official duties."

Broader Implications and Police Statement

This incident underscores the risks police personnel encounter while enforcing everyday traffic rules. Authorities have reiterated that such behavior towards officers executing their responsibilities will not be tolerated and will result in strict legal consequences. The arrest serves as a reminder to the public about the importance of adhering to traffic regulations and respecting law enforcement officials.

The case remains under investigation as police continue to gather additional details and witness statements. The individuals arrested are expected to face charges that could include penalties under both traffic violation statutes and the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita for obstruction.
