Major Security Breach Uncovered at Maharashtra's Legislative Hub
In a startling development that has exposed significant vulnerabilities, the Marine Drive Police in Mumbai have apprehended five individuals, including officials from Mantralaya, for their alleged involvement in a scheme to produce counterfeit entry passes for Vidhan Bhavan. This illicit operation came to light during the critical budget session, utilizing forged letters purportedly issued by the industries department.
Details of the Fraudulent Operation
The accused, comprising clerks and peons, are suspected of conspiring to fabricate a letter in the name of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). Through this deception, they managed to issue approximately 30 fake session passes, which were then sold for financial gain ranging from Rs 2,000 to 5,000 each. Requisitions for these passes were submitted by various government offices to the G-1 (General Branch) Room of the Maharashtra Legislative Secretariat, ostensibly for the entry of officers and employees to Vidhan Bhavan.
Investigation and Arrests
The security lapse was brought to the forefront when Industries Minister Uday Samant raised alarms about the generation of fake passes using falsified documents. Promptly, an inquiry was initiated, revealing that personnel associated with the state legislature were involved in creating counterfeit letterheads for multiple departments. The Marine Drive Police acted swiftly, arresting the following individuals late on March 25:
- Dattatraya Keshav Gunjal (53), a private individual
- Ganpat Bhau Jawale (50), a peon
- Nagesh Shivaji Patil (42), a peon
- Manoj Ananda Morbale (40), a clerk
- Swapnil Ramesh Tayde (40), a clerk
Notably, Gunjal had written his name on a pass, designating himself as an advisor to the Chief Minister's office, complete with his photo and a Mantralay stamp. Police authorities emphasized that such an act could only be accomplished with the complicity of officials from Mantralaya. Additionally, two other Mantralay employees, Mahesh Dumpalwar and Lavesh Shankar Nakate, are currently evading capture, with special teams formed to track them down and identify recipients of the fraudulent passes.
Ongoing Interrogation and Forensic Analysis
All five arrested individuals are under intensive interrogation to uncover their motives and the full extent of the conspiracy. An officer involved in the case stated, "We have just arrested them and are interrogating them to know the motive. The matter is serious as it concerns security at a sensitive government establishment." In a bid to gather digital evidence, the mobile phones of the accused have been seized for forensic examination. Furthermore, a constable attached to the Local Arms unit has been questioned in connection with the incident, highlighting the potential involvement of additional personnel.
This incident underscores grave security lapses at one of Maharashtra's most sensitive government locations, prompting calls for stricter vigilance and procedural reforms to prevent future breaches.
