Mumbai Police Arrest Two Men for Stalking Portuguese Tourist, Demanding Selfies
In a swift response to a viral social media complaint, the Agripada police in Mumbai have arrested two men for allegedly stalking a foreign tourist and persistently demanding selfies near the iconic Dhobi Ghat in Mahalaxmi last month. The incident, which occurred on February 22, has drawn attention to tourist safety in the city.
Viral Instagram Video Triggers Police Action
The case came to light after the victim, Ines Faria, a digital content creator from Portugal, posted an Instagram video showing two men following her. After the clip gained widespread attention online, the Agripada police took cognisance and registered a suo motu case on February 27. The accused were formally booked under sections for stalking and for assault or use of criminal force on a woman with intent to outrage her modesty.
Police Investigation and Arrests
A dedicated team led by Senior Inspector Sanjay Nale launched an investigation, utilizing technical inputs, CCTV footage, and local enquiries to identify the suspects. The police determined that the incident took place around 5 pm on February 22. Following their leads, they detained Gulshan Kumar Sharma (20) on February 28 and arrested him after confirming his involvement.
Investigators later discovered that the second accused, Mansukh Kumar Sharma (22), had fled to his native village in Bihar. A police team travelled to Bihar and successfully arrested him on March 1. Both men were produced before a court and remanded to police custody until March 4.
Tourist's Harrowing Experience
Ines Faria, who has been travelling across India for the past two months, shared her distressing experience on social media. She described the men as "super pushy," noting that they followed her and her companion for over 15 minutes, repeatedly asking for photos despite her multiple refusals. The situation became so overwhelming that she had to physically push them away to create space.
"This was the first such experience I have faced in India," Faria wrote. She emphasized that most of her time in the country had been "beautiful, kind and welcoming," but this particular incident marred her otherwise positive journey.

The Agripada police have demonstrated proactive measures by contacting the victim and swiftly apprehending the suspects.
