Mumbai: The Mumbai Police have terminated the services of constable Shyam Sonawane, who was assigned as the bodyguard of former NCP leader Baba Siddique, following charges of dereliction of duty. Siddique, aged 66, was fatally shot by three assailants outside the office of his MLA son Zeeshan in Bandra on the night of October 12, 2024. Sonawane, a member of the Protection and Security branch of Mumbai Police, had been deputed to ensure Siddique's security.
Departmental Inquiry and Findings
According to officials, Sonawane was immediately suspended after the incident, and a departmental inquiry was initiated against him. The inquiry concluded that Sonawane was guilty of negligence and irresponsibility in the discharge of his duties. Following the findings, Sonawane was served a show-cause notice, demanding an explanation as to why he should not be removed from service.
Termination and Acceptance
Subsequently, the police issued a termination letter to Sonawane, which he accepted on May 2. He has been formally dismissed from service for dereliction of duty. The case highlights the strict action taken by the Mumbai Police against personnel found lacking in their professional responsibilities.
