In a significant crackdown on the narcotics trade, the Mumbai Police's Anti Narcotic Cell (ANC) has confiscated a large consignment of drugs with an estimated street value of nearly Rs 10 crore. The operations, conducted separately, led to the arrest of two individuals, including a foreign national.
Worli Unit Nabs Nigerian National with Cocaine
Acting on specific intelligence, the Worli unit of the ANC set up a trap near the Railway workshop in Parel. The operation resulted in the arrest of a Nigerian national identified as Nayorm Dayak. From his possession, the police recovered a substantial 226 grams of high-purity cocaine. The narcotics have been valued at approximately Rs 2.26 crore in the international market.
During preliminary interrogation, the accused revealed that he had procured the contraband during a recent trip from Nigeria. A deeper investigation uncovered that Dayak was residing in India without valid legal documents. The ANC has registered a case against him under the stringent provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Ghatkopar Unit's Major Haul of Ecstasy and Hybrid Ganja
In a parallel and equally impactful operation, the ANC's Ghatkopar Unit apprehended a suspect in the upscale Pali Village area of Bandra (West). The initial search led to the discovery of 500 MDMA tablets, commonly known as ecstasy. The tablets weighed 248 grams and carry an estimated value of Rs 49.60 lakh.
The investigation did not stop there. Following leads from the first seizure, police officers conducted further searches which yielded an even larger haul. They recovered a massive 6.544 kilograms of hydro ganja, a potent hybrid variety of cannabis. This consignment alone is valued at a staggering Rs 6.54 crore.
The combined value of the seizures in this second case amounts to Rs 7.05 crore. The ANC has also seized other materials related to the drug trade. Officials have confirmed that a comprehensive probe is ongoing to unravel the supply chain and identify other individuals involved in the network.
Ongoing War on Drugs in Mumbai
These twin strikes underscore the Mumbai Police's continued and vigorous efforts to dismantle drug syndicates operating in the city. The seizures of high-value narcotics like cocaine, designer drug MDMA, and hybrid ganja indicate the targeting of affluent consumer markets. The involvement of an international element in one case highlights the cross-border nature of the drug trade.
The successful operations by the Worli and Ghatkopar units of the ANC send a strong message about zero tolerance towards narcotics. The police are leveraging intelligence and coordinated action to curb the menace that poses a severe threat to society, particularly the youth. Further investigations are expected to reveal more connections and possibly lead to more arrests.
