A late-night journey home from a wedding in Nagpur turned into an unimaginable tragedy for a family, claiming the lives of two young siblings and leaving their grandfather fighting for his life. The horrific accident, caused by a speeding truck, has once again cast a glaring spotlight on road safety in the city.
The Fatal Collision at RBI Square
The incident occurred around 10:35 PM on Tuesday at the busy RBI Square. According to reports, 56-year-old Sheshnath Singh was riding a motorcycle with his two grandchildren, 12-year-old Simran Singaldhupe and her younger brother Rudra. The trio, returning from a marriage function in Kamptee, was riding triple seat and were not wearing helmets.
As Singh took a right turn from the RBI Square, a truck coming from the Kalamna side rammed into the motorcycle from behind. The impact was so severe that all three were thrown onto the road. The truck was reportedly speeding at the time of the collision.
Immediate Aftermath and Arrest
Rudra sustained severe head injuries and was declared dead on the spot. His sister, Simran, succumbed to her injuries later while undergoing treatment. Their grandfather, Sheshnath Singh, survived the crash but suffered serious injuries and is currently under medical care.
Acting swiftly on the case, the Sadar police arrested the truck driver within hours of the accident. The accused has been identified as Sahendar Pancham Bin (37), a native of Uttar Pradesh. He now faces charges in connection with the fatal crash.
A Grim Reminder of Road Safety Failures
This heartbreaking accident underscores several critical and recurring issues on Indian roads:
- Overloading and lack of safety gear: The victims were riding triple seat without helmets, leaving them extremely vulnerable.
- Speeding and reckless driving: The truck driver's alleged speeding led to the fatal collision from behind.
- Night-time road safety: The accident occurred late in the evening, a time when visibility and driver alertness can be compromised.
The tragedy has left the Nagpur community in shock and mourning. It serves as a painful reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, public awareness about helmet use, and accountability for drivers of heavy vehicles. As the investigation proceeds, the family grapples with the loss of two young lives in a single, devastating moment.
