Nagpur Police Launch Crackdown on Migrant Worker Verification After PSI Stabbing Case
Police investigation in Nagpur has uncovered a critical security gap following the stabbing of a police sub-inspector in the Kalamna area. The main accused, identified as Mahendra Uike and believed to be a migrant worker from Madhya Pradesh, was found to possess no Aadhaar card or any verifiable identity documents. This revelation has sparked significant safety concerns regarding the hiring and monitoring of such laborers in the city.
Police Issue Strict Directives for Employer Compliance
In response to this incident, Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal has issued a directive mandating police checks at workplaces and construction sites. The order requires that migrants be hired only after their Aadhaar cards are collected and verified. Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Niketan Kadam has reinforced this by issuing strict instructions to all traders, businessmen, and employers of migrant laborers, emphasizing the necessity of proper documentation.
Challenges in Identifying Attackers Highlight Systemic Issues
The case involved PSI Sachin Waklekar, who was stabbed near Dipti Signal by two assailants who also fled with his motorcycle. During the investigation, Kalamna police faced considerable difficulty in identifying the attackers due to the absence of employment records. Investigators had to rely heavily on CCTV footage and manual intelligence gathering, a process described as inefficient and time-consuming.
Police sources have pointed out that the increase in burglaries and thefts in Nagpur is being linked to undocumented migrant workers. These individuals can easily evade detection and disappear without a trace, making it a real challenge to track accused persons involved in major crimes. Migrant laborers from Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh are commonly employed in sectors such as sawmills, rice mills, godowns, and construction sites across the city.
Resurfacing of Old Issues Amid Post-Pandemic Return
While reverse migration during the Covid-19 pandemic had caused major disruptions to local industries, old issues have resurfaced with the return of migrant workers in large numbers. The police have noted that the lack of proper documentation among these laborers complicates law enforcement efforts and poses ongoing risks to public safety.
This incident underscores the urgent need for robust verification systems to ensure that migrant workers are properly registered and monitored, thereby enhancing security measures in urban areas like Nagpur.
