Nagpur: The Lakadganj police station team cracked a robbery case within just six hours, arresting three hardened criminals and recovering the entire loot worth around ₹1 lakh, including an electric autorickshaw, mobile phone, and cash.
The breakthrough was significantly aided by prompt assistance from residents of the area's notorious red-light zone of Ganga Jamuna, who helped identify the suspects from the CCTV footage.
The incident occurred on Saturday night when the complainant, a resident of Dharampeth, boarded a maxi-rickshaw to return home. Three men, who were in the e-rickshaw, allegedly diverted the vehicle to a secluded spot near Maldhakka Road, near Itwari railway tracks. They assaulted the complainant with a wooden stick and snatched his belongings.
The victim sustained serious head injuries and was admitted to a hospital, where authorities informed the police, leading to the registration of a case.
Police stated that many victims robbed in the red-light area previously avoided registering complaints due to social ignominy. However, this time the hospital's intervention enabled police action. A special investigation team under senior inspector Mukund Kawade, ACP Shivprasad Parwe and Zonal DCP Rahul Madane was formed on senior officers' directives. The team swung into action using technical evidence, local informer inputs, and crime scene analysis.
Police showed photographs of suspects to the residents of the Ganga Jamuna area. The residents identified the gang members and provided crucial leads that helped track and nab the culprits.
The arrested accused are Sheikh Wasim Sheikh Hashim (31) of Yashodhara Nagar, a known history-sheeter with prior cases at Shanti Nagar Police Station. Nilesh Mendhole (23) of Prem Nagar, and Sheikh Wasim alias Akram Mohammad Rafiq (38) of Timki, are the other two arrested accused. During sustained interrogation, the trio confessed to the offence. Police seized the electric auto used in the crime, along with the stolen mobile phone and cash, ensuring complete restitution to the victim.
