Nagpur Rural Achieves Significant Reduction in Road Fatalities, Records Lowest Figures in Eight Years

The Nagpur rural district has reported a remarkable improvement in road safety, with data for the first quarter of 2026 showing the lowest number of fatal accidents and deaths in the last eight years. According to the latest statistics, the district recorded 85 fatal accidents resulting in 91 fatalities during the January-March period of 2026.

Sharp Decline in Accidents and Fatalities Compared to Previous Years

This represents a substantial 30% reduction in fatalities and a 26% decline in accidents at 18 identified high-fatality black spots when compared to the corresponding period in 2025. Nagpur rural now ranks third among Maharashtra districts with the least road accidents, showcasing a consistent downward trend from 2022 to 2026.

The data reveals a steady decline: fatal crashes dropped from 132 in the first quarter of 2022 to 85 in 2026, while fatalities decreased from 148 to 91 over the same period. This positive trajectory is attributed to the effective implementation of the Zero Fatality District (ZFD) programme.

Zero Fatality District Programme: A Data-Driven Approach to Road Safety

The ZFD initiative, led by Nagpur rural police in collaboration with the SaveLIFE Foundation, employs rigorous data analytics to identify high-risk locations, corridors, and driving behaviors. The program follows targeted interventions based on the 4Es framework: Engineering, Enforcement, Education, and Emergency Care.

Harssh Poddar, Superintendent of Police for Nagpur Rural, who is spearheading the ZFD initiative, emphasized the success of this scientific, multi-stakeholder approach. "Our data-driven strategy, supported by strict enforcement against speeding and dangerous driving, black spot corrections, vehicle fitness checks, and focused public awareness campaigns, has yielded results at an unprecedented scale in the district," stated SP Poddar.

Poddar, known for pioneering AI applications in policing through the MARVEL unit, highlighted the sustained focus on high-risk rural highways and state roads as a key factor in achieving these outcomes.

Broader Context and Future Goals

In the broader context of Maharashtra, which continues to face significant challenges with 36,450 road accidents and 15,549 fatalities recorded in 2025, Nagpur Rural's performance stands out as a beacon of hope. Poddar noted that this success demonstrates what targeted, evidence-based interventions can achieve in improving road safety.

The district police have made a public appeal, urging citizens to adhere to traffic rules, wear helmets and seat belts, avoid speeding and drunk driving, and actively support road safety measures. Additional SP Anil Mhaske expressed optimism, stating that continued public cooperation, along with ongoing engineering corrections and enforcement efforts, will help move the district closer to the ultimate goal of zero road fatalities.

This achievement in Nagpur rural serves as a model for other districts in Maharashtra and beyond, showcasing the potential of collaborative, data-informed strategies to save lives on the roads.
