Tensions erupted at the Hingna police station in Nagpur on Wednesday evening as the grieving family of a man killed in a land dispute shooting arrived with his body, demanding immediate justice and arrests.
Protest at Police Station Over Delayed Arrests
The family members and relatives of Vijay Shankar Rao Manawar (35) gathered at the police station with his mortal remains. Their primary demand was the arrest of the accused involved in the shooting incident that originated from a land dispute in Gumgaon village. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as the bereaved family sought immediate action from the authorities.
Details of the Fatal Shooting Incident
The tragic sequence of events began on December 24, when a gunfire attack left five individuals injured. The victims included Pravin Deotale and his friend, Vijay Shankar Rao Manawar. The attack was allegedly carried out by 87-year-old Nana Deotale and his son Gajanan.
Manawar, critically injured in the incident, was undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Manewada. He ultimately succumbed to his bullet injuries on January 6. Following his death, the Hingna police registered a murder case against the father-son duo. However, no arrests had been made at the time of the protest because both accused were reportedly hospitalised.
Police Assurance Pacifies Agitated Family
During the protest, the family demanded not only the immediate arrest of the accused but also financial compensation for the victim's kin. Senior police officials, including DCP Rishikesh Reddy and ACP Satish Gurav, intervened to pacify the agitated crowd.
The officers explained the procedural steps involved in the investigation and the current status of the accused. They assured the family that action would be taken strictly as per the law once the accused recovered and were discharged from the hospital. After receiving these assurances, the family eventually left the police station with the body.
The incident highlights the volatile nature of land disputes in the region and the pressing demand for swift legal recourse in the face of violent crime.
