Temple Stampede in Nalanda Claims Nine Lives, Dozens Injured
A devastating stampede at the Sheetla Mata Temple near Maghra village in Nalanda district has resulted in at least nine fatalities and more than a dozen injuries. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday during morning prayers, has sparked widespread criticism over administrative and crowd management failures.
Chaos Erupts Amid Massive Devotee Gathering
Approximately 25,000 devotees had assembled at the temple to offer prayers on the last Tuesday of the Chaitra month, a day marked by significant religious observance. The crowd size exceeded expectations, leading to a chaotic situation that quickly escalated into a deadly stampede within the temple premises.
Administrative and Management Failures Under Scrutiny
Eyewitnesses and local sources have pointed to severe lapses in preparation and execution by both the district administration and the temple management committee. Despite anticipating a heavy influx of devotees, adequate arrangements for crowd control were notably absent.
Key issues identified include:
- Insufficient barricading and lack of a systematic queue system at the temple entrance, causing dangerous congestion.
- Inadequate deployment of police personnel and volunteers to regulate the movement of the large crowd.
- Absence of an effective public announcement system to guide devotees and manage the situation as panic spread.
- Narrow pathways and obstruction by vendors and temporary stalls near the entrance, further restricting movement.
With limited manpower on site, controlling the rapidly swelling crowd became increasingly difficult. Confusion mounted as devotees pushed to enter the shrine simultaneously, with no clear instructions or announcements to alleviate the tension.
Official Response and Investigation
Nalanda Superintendent of Police Bharat Soni expressed deep sorrow over the incident, attributing part of the tragedy to the extreme heat and dehydration among devotees. "There was a massive crowd of devotees at the temple. The day was hot. Some of the devotees fainted due to dehydration within the temple premises after taking dip in cold water," Soni stated.
In response, authorities have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to conduct a thorough probe into the matter. A Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team has already commenced its work at the site to gather evidence and understand the sequence of events.
Compensation and Public Outcry
Nalanda District Magistrate Kundan Kumar confirmed that overcrowding was a primary factor in the stampede. He announced that ex gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh from the disaster management department and Rs 2 lakh from the chief minister’s relief fund would be provided to the families of each identified victim.
Meanwhile, public anger has surged, with a crowd gathering at Biharsharif Sadar Hospital to demand accountability. Protesters called for the removal of the Nalanda district magistrate and superintendent of police, holding them responsible for the lapses that led to the loss of lives.
