Nashik Court Delivers Strict Verdict in Major Drug Smuggling Case

The District and Sessions Court in Nashik has handed down a significant verdict, convicting two individuals and sentencing them to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in smuggling 40 kilograms of ganja. The incident occurred in the Indiranagar area of the city on June 18, 2020, marking a decisive action against drug trafficking in the region.

The court identified the convicts as Shafik Shah (30) and Gayashoddin Shaikh (34), both residents of Wadalagaon, Indiranagar. In addition to the prison term, the court imposed a substantial fine of Rs2 lakh each on the duo, underscoring the severity of their crime under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Police Investigation and Arrest

According to police reports, the convicts were apprehended while transporting the illegal substance in a car from the Wadala Pathardi Road in Nashik city. Acting on a tip-off, law enforcement officials intercepted the vehicle, leading to the arrest of Shah and Shaikh. A formal case was registered against them under relevant sections of the NDPS Act, initiating a thorough legal process.

Court Proceedings and Evidence

The case was investigated by Assistant Police Inspector Dharmaraj Bangar, who was then attached to the Mumbai Naka police station. It was heard in the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge S B Bhansali. Judge Bhansali meticulously examined the statements of the complainant, witnesses, and circumstantial evidence submitted by the investigating officer before finding the alleged drug peddlers guilty of the offence and awarding the sentence.

Advocate Ravindra Nikam served as the public prosecutor in the case, ensuring a robust prosecution.
