A tragic incident occurred at the Indian Maritime University's TS Chanakya campus in Nerul, Navi Mumbai, where a 19-year-old pre-sea cadet lost his life on Thursday. The deceased, identified as Somnath Singh Shivam, was a first-year BSc Nautical Science student. He allegedly fell from the halfway window of the third floor of the hostel building on the campus.
Incident Details
According to police, Singh was found lying unconscious, severely injured, and bleeding on the ground floor around 5 am. Other students in the adjacent wing of the hostel spotted him and immediately alerted authorities. He was rushed to Dr DY Patil Hospital in Nerul via ambulance, where he succumbed to his injuries during treatment at approximately 8 am.
Investigation Underway
An accidental death report (ADR) has been registered. Police officials stated that the deceased student hailed from Bihar and was sharing a room on the third floor of the hostel with another student. Investigators are exploring whether Singh committed suicide by jumping from the third floor. A notebook found in his room contained sentences indicating frustration and mental stress. However, police clarified that Singh did not explicitly mention suicide or harassment in the notebook.
Singh's roommate informed police that both had studied until 3 am due to ongoing exams, after which the roommate went to sleep. He expressed shock upon discovering Singh's body on the ground floor in the morning.
Ongoing Probe
Police are examining all possible angles, including suicide due to exam stress or an accidental fall. As part of the investigation, authorities have seized Singh's laptop, mobile phone, and notebook. Call data records from his mobile will also be obtained to determine his communications prior to the incident.
