A six-day-old baby girl was found abandoned in a garbage dump in Kalyan East on Friday morning, triggering shock and concern among local residents. The infant was rescued just in time after a local woman spotted her lying inside a bag surrounded by stray dogs.
Incident Details
The incident came to light in the Chiknipada area of Kolsewadi when Pooja Dabekar, a school employee and local resident, stepped out to dispose of household waste. While approaching the garbage collection point, she noticed movement inside a bag and found a newborn baby girl wrapped inside.
According to residents, several stray dogs were roaming around the area at the time, posing a serious threat to the infant. Realising the danger, Dabekar immediately picked up the baby and alerted local residents before informing the Kolsewadi police.
Medical Response
Police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the infant to Rukminibai Hospital, run by the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation, for medical examination and treatment. Doctors attending to the child said the baby appeared to be around six days old. Dr Sulakshana Tribhuvan said the infant's condition was stable and she would remain under observation for the next few days as a precautionary measure.
Investigation Underway
Kolsewadi police have registered a case and launched an investigation to identify the person or persons responsible for abandoning the infant. Officers are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas and collecting information from local hospitals and maternity centres to trace the baby's parents. Police officials said further action will be taken once the investigation establishes the circumstances under which the newborn was abandoned.
