A 20-year-old newly married woman died under mysterious circumstances at Majhiyawan village under Konch police station area of Gaya district on Wednesday night. Her family has alleged dowry harassment and murder. The victim, Geeta Kumari of Rajpur village under Paraiya police station, had married Amit Kumar of Majhiyawan on April 30 this year.
Family Alleges Dowry Harassment
According to an FIR lodged by Geeta’s family, she was being harassed by her husband and in-laws for a demand of Rs 10,000 and a motorcycle. The complaint also states that her mother-in-law had allegedly threatened that she would be killed if the demand was not met. Family members have accused the in-laws of strangulating her to death.
In-laws Deny Allegations
However, the in-laws have denied the allegations, claiming that Geeta had returned home after visiting a fair at Ichchhapur on Wednesday night. They alleged that a dispute broke out between the couple after she lost her mangalsutra, following which she hanged herself.
Police Investigation Underway
Konch station house officer Suday Kumar said police received information about the incident around 12:30 am early Thursday. “An FIR has been registered and investigation is underway. Raids are being conducted to arrest the accused,” he said, adding that the in-laws have fled their home.
This tragic incident highlights the persistent issue of dowry-related violence in rural Bihar. Authorities are under pressure to ensure justice for the victim and her family. The police have assured swift action, and further developments are awaited.
