NIA arrests Kolkata man for spying for Pakistan

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested a resident of Kolkata, identified as Zafar Riaz alias Rizvi, for allegedly sharing sensitive security-related information with Pakistani Intelligence Officers (PIOs) as part of an anti-India terror conspiracy, the agency stated in an official release.

Background of the Accused

According to the NIA, a Look Out Circular had already been issued against the accused, and proceedings were underway to declare him a Proclaimed Offender (PO) before he was taken into custody. He was arrested under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Official Secrets Act, and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

The agency revealed that the accused is married to a Pakistani national, and his children hold Pakistani citizenship. Zafar had previously been convicted in an espionage case under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Official Secrets Act.

Investigation Details

Investigations in case RC-12/2025/NIA/DLI uncovered that the accused had been traveling frequently between India and Pakistan since 2005. The NIA is continuing its probe to unearth the full extent of the conspiracy and any other individuals involved.

This arrest underscores the ongoing efforts by Indian security agencies to counter foreign intelligence operations aimed at undermining national security.
