NIA Expands Chargesheet in PFI Conspiracy Case, Adds Two More Accused

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has intensified its crackdown on the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) by filing a supplementary chargesheet in Patna. This legal move adds two more individuals to the list of accused, escalating the total number of people formally charged in this high-profile investigation to 20.

Details of the Supplementary Chargesheet

On Wednesday, the NIA submitted the supplementary chargesheet before the special court in Patna. The newly chargesheeted accused are identified as Mahboob Alam Nadvi and Shamim Akhtar. According to the NIA's findings, both individuals played active roles in a broader conspiracy allegedly orchestrated by PFI members.

The agency's investigation, which began after taking over the case from Bihar Police in July 2022, reveals that the conspiracy aimed to undermine public order and create divisions along religious lines through illegal and anti-national means. Investigators state that the ultimate objective was to advance the group's ideology of establishing Islamic governance in India, as outlined in a confidential PFI vision document titled "India 2047: Towards Rule of Islam in India."

Recovery of Key Evidence and Accused Involvement

The confidential document was recovered by local police from Ahmad Palace in Phulwarisharif, Patna, during the initial registration of the case. This evidence has been pivotal in linking the accused to the conspiracy.

Mahboob and Shamim were allegedly involved in efforts to recruit and train members of the organisation. They participated in organisational meetings and training sessions held at Phulwarisharif alongside other co-accused. These activities included:

  • Cadre recruitment programmes
  • Skill-building initiatives designed to strengthen the banned outfit's organisational network

The NIA has charged the accused under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The agency emphasizes that the investigation is still ongoing, with further developments expected as they continue to examine evidence and possible links connected to the conspiracy.

This case highlights the NIA's ongoing efforts to combat threats to national security and public harmony, with the chargesheet marking a significant step in the legal proceedings against the PFI.
