NIA Assumes Investigation of Bijnor Vehicle Arson Case, Suspects Online Radicalization Network
The National Investigation Agency has officially taken over the investigation into the deliberate arson of a pickup vehicle belonging to a Hindu man in Bijnor. This significant development comes after local police uncovered evidence pointing toward a sophisticated online radicalization network operating through encrypted messaging platforms.
Details of the March 4 Incident
The case centers around the targeted burning of a pickup truck owned by Nimish Rastogi on March 4. According to the First Information Report, perpetrators poured petrol on the vehicle before setting it ablaze. Investigators noted that there was also an apparent attempt to deface religious symbols and slogans on the vehicle during the attack.
Arrests and Suspect Network Uncovered
Police have already made significant progress in the investigation, resulting in multiple arrests:
- Abuzar Shamim Rain, 24, was arrested on March 12 as the primary accused
- Mohd Zaid, 28, Abuzar's cousin, was subsequently arrested
- A third youth from Mumbai has been detained for questioning
During interrogation, Abuzar allegedly confessed to police that he had been experiencing financial difficulties and approached his cousin Mohd Zaid for assistance. Investigators discovered that Zaid then connected Abuzar through the Telegram messaging application to an individual identified only as "Abubakar".
Online Radicalization and Financial Incentives
According to police statements, Abubakar allegedly assigned Abuzar the specific task of setting vehicles belonging to members of the Hindu community on fire. Abuzar reportedly carried out the arson near a temple, recorded the entire act on video, and shared this footage on Telegram as proof of completion.
Shortly after the video was shared, an undisclosed amount of money was transferred to Abuzar's bank account. Investigators are now meticulously examining the source of these funds and attempting to trace the larger financial network supporting such operations.
Expanding Investigation Reveals Broader Network
Further investigation revealed that Mohd Zaid allegedly operated a Telegram group with more than a dozen members. Police also recovered two Pakistani phone numbers from his mobile device during the investigation.
However, authorities emphasized that the suspected chain of contact remains indirect at this stage. Even Zaid did not appear to have any direct connection with Abubakar and reportedly knew him only through social media platforms. Investigative agencies suspect that Abubakar used various online platforms to lure vulnerable youths with financial inducements while attempting to provoke communal unrest through coordinated acts of violence.
Legal Framework and Escalation to NIA
The case was initially registered under BNS section 326(f) for mischief by fire. As the investigation progressed and revealed broader implications, section 152—which deals with acts endangering the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India—was added to the charges.
With the probe now widening beyond the local act of arson and a possible larger conspiracy under scrutiny, the National Investigation Agency has formally taken over the investigation. This escalation reflects the seriousness with which authorities are treating the case, particularly given the suspected involvement of online radicalization networks operating across state and potentially international boundaries.
The NIA's involvement signals a comprehensive approach to dismantling what appears to be a coordinated effort to incite communal violence through targeted property destruction, with particular focus on the digital infrastructure enabling such activities.
