Nihang Sikhs Occupy Gurdwara Roof in Uttarakhand
Half a dozen Nihang Sikhs have stationed themselves on the roof of a gurdwara in Uttarakhand's Udham Singh Nagar district, following a dispute with the gurdwara committee. The incident occurred at the Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in the Kichha area, where the Nihangs have been camping since Tuesday, according to local police.
Background of the Dispute
The disagreement stems from the Nihangs' claim that they were denied entry to the gurdwara for seva (voluntary service) during a recent religious event. They allege that the gurdwara committee members insulted them and barred them from participating. In response, the Nihangs decided to occupy the roof as a form of protest, demanding an apology and their right to perform seva.
Police officials confirmed that the Nihangs are armed with traditional weapons, including swords and spears, but no violence has been reported. Senior police officers, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, have been negotiating with both parties to resolve the standoff peacefully.
Police and Community Response
Authorities have cordoned off the area to prevent any escalation. The gurdwara committee has expressed willingness to resolve the matter through dialogue, but the Nihangs remain firm on their demands. Local Sikh leaders have also intervened, urging calm and stressing the importance of unity within the community.
According to police sources, the Nihangs have been provided with food and water, and their safety is being ensured. The situation remains tense but under control, with hopes for a peaceful resolution in the coming days.
