Coimbatore: The Singanallur police on Saturday registered a case against nine individuals who forcibly broke open a mortuary door and removed a deceased man's body to stage a road blockade on Kamarajar Road on Friday.
Incident Details
According to a police officer, S Mahamaheswaran, 29, a resident of Sivaganga, died by suicide on Thursday. His body was kept at the ESI Govt Medical College and Hospital for postmortem examination. However, relatives grew suspicious after noticing bloodstains on the body.
On Friday, a group of people arrived at the hospital and forcibly entered through the eastern and western verandas while shouting aggressively. They pushed aside police personnel, doctors, and mortuary assistants who attempted to stop them. The group also smashed the glass panes of the doors leading to doctors' consultation rooms.
Body Removed for Protest
After entering the mortuary, the group took Mahamaheswaran's body and moved it to Kamarajar Road in front of the hospital. There, they staged a road blockade, demanding justice and a transparent investigation into the cause of death.
Legal Action
Following the incident, the hospital's resident medical officer lodged a police complaint. Based on CCTV footage from the hospital, the Singanallur police registered a case under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Tamil Nadu Medicare Service Persons and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act against nine relatives of the deceased. Police are investigating to identify others involved in the case.
