A scientist from the National Institute of Virology (NIV) has been arrested in Alappuzha, Kerala, for possession of 3.630 grams of MDMA, a synthetic drug commonly known as ecstasy. The arrest was made by the Alappuzha Excise Enforcement Bureau on Monday.

The accused, identified as Dr. S. Sarkale, was reportedly a member of the NIV team involved in developing a vaccine against COVID-19. According to excise officials, he was apprehended during a routine check near the Alappuzha beach. The drug was found concealed in his bag.
Investigation Underway
Excise officials are investigating the source of the drug and whether Sarkale was involved in any drug trafficking network. Preliminary inquiries suggest he may have procured the substance for personal use. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
