Tragic Drowning Claims Life of Noida Student in Water-Filled Pit
A 23-year-old student from Indirapuram, Harshit Bhatt, tragically lost his life after drowning in a water-filled pit located near the Supernova building in Sector 94, Noida. The incident occurred around 4 PM on Wednesday, sending shockwaves through the community and highlighting severe safety concerns at abandoned construction sites.
Details of the Incident and Victim Profile
Harshit Bhatt was pursuing an undergraduate degree in physical education at a private university in Sector 125. Earlier on the day of the tragedy, he had appeared for his final paper of the sixth semester. To celebrate the completion of his exams, he decided to go for a picnic with three friends near the large water-filled pit situated on the site of the proposed Noida Habitat and Convention Centre behind the Supernova building.
This project, developed by the UP Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Limited (UPRNNL), has been stalled since 2022. The Noida Authority had cancelled the tender after UPRNNL sublet the site to a third party that was allegedly excavating soil illegally. The students entered the site through a broken section in the boundary wall, planning their picnic near the edge of the pit.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Tragedy
Around 3:30 PM, the group decided to take a swim in the pit. According to statements from his friends to the police, Harshit was the first to enter the water. After completing two laps around the pit, he attempted to venture further toward the center. Unfortunately, he did not realize the depth and began to drown.
One of his friends tried to rescue him but failed as his foot got trapped in a marshy patch. Realizing the situation was beyond their control, they immediately alerted the authorities. Teams from the Sector 126 police station, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the fire department rushed to the spot along with divers.
They eventually pulled Harshit out and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The body was later sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Police Investigation and Safety Concerns
Deputy Commissioner of Police Saad Miya Khan stated that preliminary investigations suggest death due to drowning, though police are examining all aspects of the incident. No formal complaint has been filed by the family at the Sector 126 police station yet, and further action will depend on the complaint and post-mortem findings.
Divers involved in the rescue operation revealed that the edges of the pit were relatively shallow, but the center was significantly deeper and contained marsh-like sludge. Although the water appeared clear from above, the sticky bottom made it extremely difficult for anyone trapped to escape.
During inspection of the site, police found beer cans and liquor bottles near the pit, indicating the students might have been intoxicated at the time of the incident. This adds another layer to the ongoing investigation.
Family Background and Previous Similar Incidents
Harshit's family is reeling from the shock of his sudden death. His father serves in the Indian Army and is currently posted in Ladakh. His mother and aunt informed police that Harshit was never professionally trained in swimming but had always enjoyed it as a hobby.
This tragic event echoes a similar incident months earlier when 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj Mehta drowned in a water-filled pit in Sector 150. Yuvraj was on his way home from Gurgaon when the accident occurred on the night of January 16-17. These repeated incidents underscore glaring safety lapses at construction sites and raise serious questions about the authorities' apathy in addressing such hazards.
Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and further action will follow based on findings and statements from witnesses. The community awaits answers as this case brings to light urgent needs for better site security and public safety measures in Noida.
