NTR District Police Commissionerate Excels in Hit-and-Run Compensation Scheme

In a landmark achievement for justice and financial support, the NTR district police commissionerate in Vijayawada has established itself as a leader in implementing the hit-and-run compensation scheme across Andhra Pradesh. This initiative, which began on April 1, 2022, aims to provide crucial aid to victims of road accidents where perpetrators flee the scene.

Impressive Statistics and Swift Action

Since the scheme's inception, the commissionerate has registered a total of 336 hit-and-run cases. Out of these, 286 cases have been efficiently forwarded through revenue authorities to the district magistrate and then to the General Insurance Corporation (GIC) in Mumbai. According to official data, compensation amounting to Rs 2.27 crore has already been disbursed to 281 victims across 270 cases. This reflects a remarkably high rate of claim settlement within a relatively short timeframe, showcasing the effectiveness of the implementation efforts.

National Recognition and Scheme Details

Thanks to this efficient execution, the NTR district police commissionerate has not only secured the top position in Andhra Pradesh but has also been ranked among the top three in the entire country. A hit-and-run case is defined as an incident where a driver responsible for an accident leaves the scene without assisting the injured or informing the police. Acting on Supreme Court directives, the state government provides financial assistance through GIC, Mumbai, in such cases where the accused remains unidentified. Under this scheme, Rs 2 lakh is allocated to the legal heirs of deceased victims, while Rs 50,000 is given to those who sustain grievous injuries.

He added that ongoing efforts are focused on clearing any pending cases at the earliest to ensure no victim is left without support.
