Odisha Man Arrested for Raping Minor Neighbor in Jajpur District
A 50-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday in Jajpur district, Odisha, for allegedly raping a 17-year-old girl. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the local community, occurred on Monday evening when the victim was returning home from a nearby market.
Details of the Alleged Assault
According to police reports, the accused, who is a neighbor of the victim, dragged her to a secluded spot and raped her. The girl's mother lodged a First Information Report (FIR) on Tuesday, alleging the assault and stating that the accused had threatened to kill the girl if she disclosed the incident to anyone.
Acting swiftly on the complaint, police arrested the man. Investigating Officer Chinmayee Sahoo confirmed the arrest, noting that the accused has confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Legal Actions and Medical Examination
The accused has been booked under Section 70(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertains to the rape of a woman under 18 years of age, and Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. These charges underscore the severity of the offense and the legal protections in place for minors.
The victim was taken to a community health centre (CHC), where doctors conducted a medical examination and confirmed the rape. This medical evidence is crucial for the ongoing investigation and potential prosecution.
Court Proceedings and Custody
The accused was produced in a Jajpur court on Tuesday. His bail plea was rejected by the court, and he was remanded in judicial custody. This decision reflects the court's stance on ensuring justice and preventing any potential interference with the investigation.
Police officials have emphasized their commitment to a thorough investigation, with the case highlighting broader concerns about child safety and sexual violence in the region. The community has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to authorities.
