In a significant ruling, the additional district judge in Rayagada, Odisha, on Wednesday sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a woman in November 2025. According to an official police release, the crime occurred on November 18, 2025. The survivor and her husband were waiting at Rayagada to board a train to Koraput when the accused approached them. He allegedly lured the couple to a nearby colony under the false pretext of providing accommodation, citing the unavailability of trains at that hour. Later, when the woman was alone, the accused sexually assaulted her.
Following a formal complaint lodged by the survivor, the police acted promptly, leading to the immediate arrest of the accused. The investigation was conducted meticulously, with officers emphasizing that the implementation of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has played a crucial role in expediting such cases. This new legal framework has enabled prompt investigation, robust evidence collection, and timely filing of charge sheets, all contributing to faster convictions and reinforcing the police's commitment to women's safety.
