Odisha Police Expose Deceptive Ganja Trafficking Tactic Using Women and Child as Cover
In a significant breakthrough, police in Subarnapur district of Odisha on Thursday uncovered a sophisticated ganja trafficking operation where smugglers allegedly used women and a child as human shields, posing as a family on a road trip to evade police scrutiny. The modus operandi was exposed during an early morning operation conducted under the Special Nasha Mukt Odisha Abhiyan.
Interception and Arrests
The operation led to the interception of a suspicious vehicle carrying 31 kilograms of ganja. Police arrested three individuals, including two women, while the child found in the car was safely reunited with family members. According to Subarnapur Superintendent of Police Narayan Nayak, the vehicle raised alarms when it accelerated upon spotting a police team.
"Our police team pursued the car for approximately 2 kilometers before successfully stopping it," SP Nayak stated. "Initially, the occupants appeared to be an ordinary family traveling together. However, during questioning, inconsistencies in their stories began to emerge."
Unraveling the Deception
Police revealed that one of the women identified the male occupant as her husband but failed to provide his name when questioned. These contradictory responses prompted officers to conduct a thorough search of the vehicle, leading to the discovery of ganja allegedly concealed inside briefcases.
Inspector General of Police (Northern Range) Himanshu Lal emphasized that enforcement teams have intensified surveillance against trafficking networks operating in the region. "We have been maintaining strict vigilance on ganja trafficking activities," IG Lal declared. "No deceptive tactic employed by these criminal mafias will succeed, and all perpetrators will be apprehended."
Broader Crackdown on Trafficking Cartels
The IG further disclosed that in just four days, authorities have dismantled a major ganja cartel, seizing a total of 15 quintals of ganja valued at approximately Rs 20 crore. These consecutive seizures represent a substantial blow to organized ganja cartels that have been utilizing western Odisha routes for smuggling operations.
In a separate case detected on the same day, police confiscated 121 kilograms of ganja from a secret compartment built inside a pickup vehicle, resulting in the arrest of two additional suspects. Law enforcement sources indicate that ganja mafias have been exploiting Balangir and Subarnapur districts as transit corridors for smuggling contraband from source districts like Boudh and Kandhamal to various parts of the state and beyond.
Evolving Smuggling Techniques
Traffickers are increasingly adopting deceptive methods to avoid detection during highway movements. The use of women and children as human shields represents a disturbing trend aimed at reducing suspicion during transportation. Police authorities have vowed to continue their aggressive crackdown on these illicit networks, implementing enhanced surveillance measures and intelligence-gathering operations to disrupt trafficking activities across the region.
