Odisha Road Accidents Claim 6,483 Lives in 2025, Marking a 5.6% Increase
State police statistics reveal a concerning rise in road fatalities across Odisha, with 6,483 deaths recorded in 2025. This represents a significant 5.6% increase from the 6,142 fatalities reported in the previous year, highlighting ongoing challenges in road safety management.
Accident Numbers and District-Wise Trends
The total number of road accidents in the state also climbed, rising by 3.3% from 12,375 in 2024 to 12,782 in 2025. While 14 districts experienced a decrease in accidents, the data presents a mixed picture across regions.
Nine districts—Angul, Balasore, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Kendrapada, and Sambalpur—recorded a decline in fatalities. Notably, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kandhamal, Kendrapada, and Sambalpur achieved simultaneous reductions in both accidents and deaths, suggesting effective local interventions.
In contrast, several other districts witnessed increases in both metrics, while some reported fewer accidents but higher fatality rates, indicating potential issues with accident severity or emergency response.
Sharpest Rises in Fatalities Identified
Specific districts stood out for alarming spikes in road deaths:
- Boudh registered the sharpest increase at 41%, with deaths rising from 66 to 93.
- Malkangiri followed with a 28.7% rise, from 101 to 130 deaths.
- Sonepur saw a 22.7% increase, from 66 to 81 fatalities.
- Rayagada recorded a 22% jump, from 123 to 150 deaths.
Officials Cite Vehicle Growth and Enforcement Efforts
Transport department officials noted that the fatality growth rate in 2025 was 2% lower than the 7% rise recorded in 2024 compared to 2023. They partially attributed the overall increase to a surge in vehicle registrations, which rose by approximately 11.4% from 7.9 lakh in 2024 to 8.8 lakh in 2025.
A senior transport official emphasized the impact of targeted enforcement measures: “Stringent drives helped reduce accidents and deaths in several districts. The ‘Zero Fatality Fortnight’ campaign held from November 16 to 30 last year achieved a 33.5% reduction in road accident deaths.” District collectors and Superintendents of Police have been directed to prepare comprehensive road safety plans to address local issues.
Expert Criticism and Departmental Response
Road safety expert Chinmay Rath offered a critical perspective, stating: “Despite reforms, enforcement drives, and awareness campaigns, fatalities continue to rise. Even the Memorandum of Understanding signed with IIT Madras in December 2024 has yet to show tangible results.”
In response, the transport department reiterated its commitment to improving road safety. Officials noted that IIT Madras has developed new strategies, including the ‘Zero Accident Day’ campaign aimed at fostering behavioral change among road users.
Technological Initiatives for Enhanced Safety
In January 2025, IIT Madras launched an advanced road safety dashboard designed to empower citizens and officials. This platform enables residents to report issues such as poor road conditions or missing signage directly.
The dashboard also provides senior officers with analytics to identify accident hotspots and monitor performance metrics. A department official explained: “Unlike social media complaints, this integrated dashboard ensures grievances are tracked and acted upon, with accountability at the highest levels.”
Call for Shared Responsibility
Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur emphasized that road safety is a collective duty: “The government has been making serious efforts to improve road safety across the state. Each one of us must drive carefully and responsibly to protect our own lives and those of fellow road users.” This statement underscores the need for combined governmental action and public adherence to traffic rules to curb the rising toll of road accidents in Odisha.
